I am a big RUSH fan and like everything about the band - the musicianship, the songs and lyrics, the live performances and the fact that they've achieved incredible success entirely on their own terms.
I spent countless hours in my teens and early twenties trying my best to learn these songs note for note.
I recently dusted off my basses and revisited some of my favorites.
In addition to my Rush covers, I play along with other songs that I think are interesting, specifically from a bass player's perspective.

Knowing Me, Knowing You Bass Cover
"Knowing Me, Knowing You" by ABBA off of their "Arrival" album which came out in 1977 and features Rutger Gunnarsson on bass.
The MBJ bass is in Jazz Bass mode for this video. Joe swapped out the Reverse P that was in the neck position for a Jazz, so now I've got two Jazz pickups. It changed the bass' voicing a bit, but not too dramatically. I'm curious to hear that it is going to sound like as a Double-Reverse P.
Here's a live version of the song. Though it's a bit slower, you can hear what Rutger was gunning for in the bass-line... just pure randomness - ua-cam.com/video/1vTeqD2SUA8/v-deo.htmlsi=gIYcfATvdJom52tl
I got a notification that "The Concert: A Tribute to ABBA" is playing at The Capital Theatre in Port Chester, NY in October. I've been itching to see an ABBA tribute, but always seem to take a pass on it at the last minute. It's hard to tell which ones are really good. I might be mistaken, but this band might be the one that actually has, former ABBA bassist, Mike Watson with them.

Happy Posthumous Birthday to Paul Goddard who was born on this date in 1945 and who passed away in April of 2014. Paul was well known for playing Rickenbacker basses, but I won't hold that against him. "Spooky" by Atlanta Rhythm Section off of their "Underdog" album which came out in 1979 and featured Paul Goddard on bass. The song is actually a remake. The first version was an instrumental. Th...

Happy Father's Day! I wasn't going to upload anything this week, but here we are. This was one of the videos that I pre-uploaded on to UA-cam as a precaution before switching computers (in case something went wrong with the migration). Lynn and I went to see John Fogerty at Bethel Woods on Friday and Almost Queen last night. Thankfully, I have this coming week off from work. "Round and Round" b...

"White Knuckles" by Elvis Costello and The Attractions off of the 'Trust' album which came out in 1981 and featured, the one and only, Bruce Thomas on bass. Bruce will be the first to tell you that many of his bass-lines were inspired by an assortment of Motown and R&B bass-lines. Some generally and some specifically. He said that this was one of his bass parts that is all-him... He said - "Her...

"I Just Wanna Stop" by Gino Vannelli off of his 'Brother to Brother' album which came out in 1978 and, according to Wikipedia, featured Leon Gaer on "synthesized electric bass". It doesn't sound like synth-bass to me, but I understand that Gino Vannelli had great production values on his albums. The Rush song that Harry suggested to me was "Bacchus Plateau", not "No One At The Bridge". I'm play...

Happy Belated Birthday Marvine!!! I don't know how, but I missed Marvine's birthday this year and I feel terrible about it. It was on April 22nd. So sorry Marvine, I hope you had a great day. Tomorrow is the last night of a month long run of shows for us. We had Barry Manilow back on April 20th. Then, we had our friend, Adam Cyran's Rush tribute band AF2K (A Farewell to Kings) on April 26th. Th...

Struggling to decide what to upload this week and I stumbled across this one. It’s another do-over. The original version was the 20th video I uploaded on my channel and the very first non-Rush cover. I was looking at my uploads in chronological order and was a bit surprised (though not shocked) at what I saw. I uploaded my first video on January 24th, 2010 and uploaded my 20th on February 15th,...

"Pretty Words" by Elvis Costello and The Attractions off of their "Trust" album which came out in 1981 and features, the one and only, Bruce Thomas on bass. Another super-cool bass-line by Bruce! I've got another half-dozen covers featuring Bruce Thomas' bass-lines off to the side and he was gracious enough to write a few words for each of them. I did not get one specifically for this song, but...

Wishing my dear old friend, Helen Anastasia Anderson, a very Happy Birthday! I'm actually a couple of days early, but who wants to upload on a Sunday? This is a do-over. I uploaded my original cover back on January 30, 2011, right around the time that Helen and I became acquainted. I wish a reluctant Happy Birthday to Roger Hodgson who was born on this date in 1950. Why my reluctance? I can count on one hand the number of videos I've had permanently blocked, taken down, received copyright strikes for... and I never took it personally, until this one. This is a really old video and it kept getting blocked. I'd no sooner file a counter-dispute and win the appeal when the vi...

Great to hear the bass upfront! Fantastic playing 💯
👍🇧🇷🤘
I've actually been listening to some ABBA recently including the Arrival album in full.... This is one of my favourite ABBA songs, but I also realy like 'When I kissed the teacher" from the same album I didn't know how busy the bass line was in this track though... Rutger is a very underrated bass player indeed and you did a great job as usual - I'll have a listen to the live version Edited to add - yes the live version is a bit slower and also shorter than the studio version, but still worth a listen!
Sounding great Troy. Love the selection.
So beautifully melodic on the bass - Thanks for all your hard practice, education, and talent Troy
Well played!
You’re a true virtuoso man! Every single cover is executed perfectly, I strive for my bass playing to be as good as yours
Awesome playing!
Wow! Incredible 😀
This my three year old’s FAVORITE song. I’m new to bass but currently trying to learn it. Thank you for sharing! It’s helped me a lot!
Great cover! Rutger Gunnarsson made some beautiful bass lines!
Prolly my fave Abba tune. Didn't expect such a busy bass line. I'm weak for cheesy 70 love tunes....nostalgia and all that. Killed it Troy. ✌️
Great job, MASTER PLEASE .. FEEL ALRIGHT GRAND FUNK
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
Gene played all those walking bass lines while singing harmony
Yup!
Hey! Could you cover The Color of Right by Rush please? That would be awesome! Thanks
I'll check it out!
@@TJH3113cool! I think it’s probably Rush’s easiest song
Thank you for this very nice cover. ABBA's basslines are always interesting.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
sound amazing ,no excuse i need to know that one ,great .superb play
Many thanks!!
I loved playing this one, especially the harmony guitar part in the solo.. Just the bass and drums driving along under that. So cool!
Rock on!
I personally would would prefer the 35P4 version where the D&G magnet poles are stacked above the E&A. This orientation helps the D&G output to be some what more in balance with the output of the E&A strings. I never understood why Leo Fender placed the D&G under the E&A. That configuration is just too lopsided. Stuart Spector did it the right way.
That's what I had in this bass before changing it out. I had the soap bars put in so it would be super flexible. Just take one p/u out and plug the other one it. Like I said, it was originally a reverse-p/j. Now it's a J. But I have another 35PA, so I'd like to try out a double-P at some point, just to see how it sounds. I totally agree with the benefits of the reverse-p that you mentioned. I wonder who the first to do that was... I'm not sure it was Spector.
@@TJH3113 Maybe it was Leland Sklar Honestly Im not exactly sure either
Great song and playing. You can't go wrong with any ABBA song. Brilliant bass line.
Thank you.
How did he come up with his bass lines? Just insane!!! Killer cover! Thanks Troy!
I have no idea! Thank you!
Wow, well played, I really liked this, thank you for making and sharing the video + your thoughts/analysis. Nothing wrong with the sound of the new bass!
Thanks so much.
Nice! I had to learn this and a zillion other songs for the musical Mamma Mia a couple months ago!
Thank you! Eesh... better you than me.
14 years ago? Where has the time gone? Great playing!
Can you believe it? You tell me. Thanks Constantine!
wooh! awesome!
Thanks!
Love your channel. Always puts me in a good mood and love discovering and listening to known and not known songs (just watched your Tubes - Theme park cover for example). Hope you’re having a great weekend my friend.
Awesome! Thank you!
@@TJH3113 how do you learn the songs? Look up tabs or learn by hearing the notes? Always have trouble finding tabs that are correct.
FLAWLESS !!!
Thanks!
OMG, what a beautiful bass !!! After all this time, YOU are the one guy I turn to to learn the CORRECT bass lines. I really love the heart and soul that you put into your playing... Well done, TJ
I'm glad you like it! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I appreciate it!
Wow, I've known the song since it came out and I had no idea the bass line was so intricate and gorgeous. Thank you for learning and sharing this .
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
You nailed it! I'm the one who suggested it, but at the time I had no idea it was so complex! Thank you. I'm going to enjoy learning this! God bless.
Thanks! Good luck!
Love the ABBA basslines.
Me too!
Rutger’s feel and timing….genius.
It is.
That randomness may have been hard to cover (you did it brilliantly), but is one of the elements that make Rutger’s basslines so fun to listen to! Fabbalous!
Also want to say I think your bass sounds great with the dual J pickups!
Thanks Woody!
What an amazing bass line. I'm not that familiar with ABBA songs. Beautiful playing Troy. Thanks for sharing with us.
It's a strange one! Thank you, Constantine.
I love it
Thank you
💯👍☮️
Amazing playing Troy. I don't think I will ever understand the genius of Rutgar Gunnarsson, but you certainly had a handle on it.
Thank you. Me neither.
Rutger! As a metal guitar player, I like ABBA!! Great playing Troy 🤘😎🤘!! Fantastic!!
Cool!!!
Excellent cover ! ABBA's basslines are very nice. Thank you Troy ;-)
Thank you very much!
Not sure if you take requests but you should do "Bitter Fingers" by Elton John!
I'll check it out.
Great song! The bass and your playing sound incredible!
Thanks a lot!
Great song. I saw the Abba "avatar show" (like holograms) in London earlier this year. It was amazing, they are so lifelike and so realistic! Highly recommend anyone who can to go see it, even if you aren't a big Abba fan. The technology is amazing.
It is, isn't it? I would check it out. I heard Kiss is doing something similar... I probably wouldn't see that.
You make it look so easy... But I know it's not!
Thanks!
awesome cover, you should do a song called hand of doom by black sabbath
Thank you. I'll check it out.
Thanks Troy. One of my favourite basslines of all time - and an absolute pig to play - well above my pay grade, so really well done. I've never suggested anything, but you might consider Joe Long's bassline from The Night (as opposed to December 63). One of those ones that starts simple and then gets a bit tricky.
It was my pleasure... sort of. I bought the song last night. It's interesting. You never know.
I love ABBA but I would have to pass on this one. I look for a pattern in a bass line, the turn around etc... This is not beyond my skill level but rather beyond my attention level. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us Troy. I always enjoy your videos and always watch them in their entirety. On a side not What about an Eddie mask (Iron Maiden) or Vic mask (Megadeth).
That's exactly why I resisted learning it, but once I started it I had to see it through. About the masks - I guess I'm not a big enough fan of either band to want a mask of their mascots.
@@TJH3113 I thought that would be your answer in reference to the masks but I had to ask.
Just awesome - brilliant!
Many thanks!
Got a new bass! So eager to play this! *watches the video* Oh phuck that.
Little by little, bit by bit.
